WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – During brief remarks from the Rose Garden on Thursday, President Joe Biden focused on a peaceful transition and keeping the faith.
“We accept the choice the country made,” Biden said. “On Jan. 20, we’ll have a peaceful transfer of power here in America.”
Biden’s remarks were the first he has made in public since President-elect Donald Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. Biden described Harris as a “partner and public servant” who has “true character.”
“She ran an inspiring campaign, and everyone got to see something that I learned early on to respect so much, her character,” Biden said.
Biden also alluded to the fairness and transparency of the U.S. election system.
“It can be trusted, win or lose,” he said.
The president ended his speech with a focus on unity and his plans to make every day count with just 74 days remaining in his presidential term.
“Remember a defeat does not mean we are defeated,” Biden said. “We all get knocked down, but the measure of our character, as my dad would say, is how quickly we get back up.”
Both President Biden and Vice President Harris said they called Trump on Wednesday to congratulate him on his victory. Biden also invited Trump to the White House for an Oval Office meeting as part of a peaceful transition.
“President Trump looks forward to the meeting, which will take place shortly, and very much appreciated the call,” Trump campaign communications director Steven Cheung said.
