WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) -- Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is calling on the FDA to do something about the obesity and diabetes epidemics in the country.
"From where I'm standing here, the FDA has not responded in any way with the urgency of the crisis," Sanders said.
Sanders says for decades, Congress and the FDA allowed large corporations to profit by enticing children and adults to consume ultra-processed foods and beverages loaded up with sugar, salt and saturated fat.
"There are 15 teaspoons of sugar in this product. How many parents in America know that when they give it to their kids, say, here, have a coke. Go out and play ball. Have you done your job?" Sanders asked.
"With all due respect, I've been working on this problem for all of my career. This is what I've done," FDA Commissioner Robert Califf said.
According to the CDC, more than 35 million Americans have Type 2 diabetes and about 90% of those with Type 2 diabetes are obese. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) wants more clarity on nutrition labels, like in other countries.
"Have other nations already embraced front of package labeling?" Kaine asked.
"Absolutely. Right. Not just labeling, but warning signs," Califf said.
Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) agrees this is a major issue, but there is no silver bullet to resolve it.
"The committee needs to look at all factors leading to obesity, and how Congress can use its resources to promote a healthier lifestyle," Cassidy said.
Cassidy promises Congress will continue to press on this issue with bipartisan support, when the next administration takes office and Republicans control the Senate.
